Directors' Cuts: Joel Knoernschild

An opalescent night skate soundtracked by FKA Twigs

The Southern California-born director and skateboarding aficionado breaks down the technical challenges of his monochromatic montage:

“With Sight Unseen, we weren’t sure if the process of shooting a skateboarder and dancer at 500-1000 frames-per-second wearing reflective material was going to work. We needed an enormous amount of light at that frame rate to get the exposure just right, and to be mobile enough to move through the skate park as fast as possible. Luckily, it ended up working out as director of photography Randy Wedick and I had envisioned, with a really interesting graphic element to it, exaggerating Slick’s physical 'bone break' dance movements and capturing South African skater Thalente’s technical tricks as he’s flying through the air."
